Irish National 2006 Result

\"IrishPoint Barrow, trained by Pat Hughes and ridden by Philip Carberry was the unexpected winner of the 2006 race with Irish Grand National odds of 20/1. It was a great day for trainer Hughes, who had not had a winner for over six months. The eight year old took up the running from four fences out and was never headed from that point on; eventually winning by a length from Robbie Loughran aboard the fancied 10/1 shot Oulart. A New Story, who was to be fourth in the Irish Grand National 2008, was a long way back in third and American Jennie, who herself was to be third in the Irish Grand National 2007, came home in fourth.

Hot favourite Dun Doire never featured and although finishing the race, was a huge disappointment for the expectant punters.

For Philip Carberry it was a special triumph, as he became the third member of the famous Carberry family to become an Irish Grand National winner. Both Paul, his brother and Dad, Tommy had won the race previously. The Carberry family are clearly deserving of their place in the Irish Grand National Legends. On our Irish Grand National tips page at the time we had indeed tipped up Point Barrow as a solid each way chance. An tip clearly taken advantage of by many of our Irish Grand National Free bet punters.
